The Nottinghamshire Chess Foundation (NCF) is also a main sponsor of the National Youth Championships Finals. The NCF provides financial support and grants to develop and improve chess participation and achievement in the Nottinghamshire area.

ECF Membership Details



If the player is an ECF member, their Membership Number is 6 digits long (e.g. 018194), and you can find it in the English Chess Federation rating website



If the player is an ECF member you can find their Membership Class (e.g. Silver) in the English Chess Federation rating website

NOTE:
- To play in a Zonal, the player must be an ECF silver member or above. Juniors can apply for free silver membership for 1 year or renew their silver membership for £6
- To play in the National Finals, the player must be an ECF silver member or above for U18 and lower age groups, but a gold member or above for the U20 age group.

EJCOA NATIONAL YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS 2024

A major national competition aimed at providing experience and training for young chess players in the following age categories:
Under 8, Under 10, Under 12, Under 14, Under 16, Under 18 & Under 20
(ages as of 1 January 2024)

Eligibility: Players should be resident in England and a member of the ECF.

The EJCOA National Youth Championships are organised by the English Junior Coaches and Organisers Association: a national non-profit organisation, in partnership with regional junior chess organisations across England.

All tournaments will include female and male players, with prizes and titles specifically for male and female players in each age group.

Zonals – Qualification

These will be 1-day, 5-round Rapidplay events or 3-round Standardplay events, held around the country from January to June 2024.

The top boy and the top girl in each age category will qualify from their Zonal to the National Finals.
(In case there is no qualifier from a particular age group, extra wild card places will be awarded by EJCOA, based on results in the Zonals)

Please note: While Zonals may vary the number of separate tournaments (for example, one Zonal may hold just Under 10, Under 12, and Under 20 tournaments), players will still qualify from all of the age groups (Under 8, Under 10, Under 12, Under 14, Under 16, Under 18 and Under 20).

Rating: All games will be ECF Rapidplay or ECF Standardplay Rated.
Prizes: Each Zonal will award trophies to qualifiers and other prizes, depending on the number of entries. These may include modest cash prizes, online coaching & courses, chess software, books & other chess products, and will be announced before the start of each Zonal.

National Finals

The National Finals of the EJCOA Youth Championships will be 5-round Standardplay FIDE-rated tournaments to be held at Nottingham High School, Waverley Mount, Nottingham NG7 4ED on 5-7 July 2024.

You can qualify for the National Finals in one of three ways:
  • By winning your age section in a Zonal of the EJCOA Youth Championships (one boy and one girl qualify from Under 8, U10, U12, U14, U16, U18 and U20 age groups).
  • By rating. Any player with a published current minimum ECF or FIDE standard play rating (as below) is entitled to enter the EJCOA National Youth Championships:
    Under 8: 800
    Under 10: 1000
    Under 12: 1200
    Under 14: 1400
    Under 16: 1600
    Under 18: 1700
    Under 20: 1800
  • Wild Card entries. These players will be invited by the EJCOA Selection Committee, based on a combination of:
    A) Performance in an EJCOA Youth Championships Zonal.
    B) Performance in other recent events

There will be cash prizes, as well as trophies, online coaching & courses, chess software, books & other chess products.
