Chess websites & online resources

There is a mass of chess websites & online resources available and too long a list to mention. So the association will only mention a few recommendations, which are listed below:

  • Chess Kid
    This is by far the best website for children. The website offers hundreds of leessons and videos in a children-friendly format. You can gain rewards and rating points for playing, as well as doing puzzles and watching videos. There is a free version. You can then upgrade to gold to get more and longer videos and puzzles.
  • Lichess
    This is mainly a playing site. Lichess has a learning area as well. As a coach you can set up thousands of studies and use them for your online coaching modules, using the tools/analysis function and then setting up studies that can be either private or public.
  • Chess.com
    This is another playing site. Chess.com has numerous learning tools. As a coach, you can use their analysis board for online lessons.
  • Chessable
    This is a learning site. The site takes chess books and converts them into online books with a move trainer. The online books have tests attached so that you can assess if you have understood what you have read, and practice the moves as often as you like. There are plenty of free Chessable books for players of all levels.
  • Acorn Chess
    Acorn Chess is a new teaching resource, particularly useful for tutors teaching online using Zoom, MS Teams and such like. Its unique features include extensive support of mini-games and a weak engine tuned to match typical mistakes by juniors learning at school level. It also supports endgame and tactics positions, and has a tutor set-up function for producing custom libraries of such positions.
  • Tornelo
    Tornelo provides an entry collection and payments, pairings program, rating system and online games all in one place. More coaching features are due to be added soon.
  • Car Games: Chess
    Web page with great links covering the history of the game, the rules, strategies and tactics, the mathematics and psychology of the game, plus links to lots of other websites for practising and reading about chess!
