Lichess provides very easy tools to use for chess coaching. The website is: lichess.org
The site has its own puzzles and studies that you can look at. Numerous players on the site have set up their own studies, which you can view if they are set up as ‘Public‘.
The Lichess site sections that will be useful for a chess coach include:
- Puzzles. Your students can try their hand at puzzles. You will be able to check their rating performance, the areas that they are doing well in, and also those areas that need attention.
- Learn. Under this dropdown, there are the following functions: Chess basics, Practice, Coordinates, Study, Coaches. All are relevant if you want to coach on Lichess.
- Tools. The functions under this heading are very important as a coach. They are: Analysis board, Opening explorer, Board editor, Import game.
If you plan on using your own work on Lichess, then the Board editor function is very important. You can set up any position you like with this function.
Once you have set up your position, simply press the ‘Study‘ button above. This will take you to another screen. You can either press the ‘CREATE STUDY‘ button, which means it is new study, or click on a previous study you have made and add your new position to it.
Most of the headings above are filled in already and you don’t need to change them. The important one is ‘Visibility‘. This defaults to ‘Public‘, meaning everyone on lichess can see it. If you want it just for your own students, change this dropdown to ‘Invite only‘.
Once you have created your study, you can screen share with Zoom to do your lesson. Note there are some nice functions that are useful on the study page. These can be used by simply testing to see if you like them.
